The harness connects the pilot to the wing and largely determines comfort and safety in flight. Before choosing one, think about your piloting level, the type of flying you do and how you will carry your gear.
At beginner level, look for upright, stable harnesses that are easy to adjust and help you keep a correct posture. With experience, many pilots move to more enclosed harnesses designed for long thermal flights.
Harnesses use foam protection, an airbag or a combination of both. Foam protects from take-off without needing to inflate; an airbag is lighter and packs smaller. Always check that the protection is certified and in good condition.
If you walk up to take-off or travel often with your gear, a light or reversible harness that turns into a backpack greatly reduces the total weight. In exchange it usually offers less storage and more compact protection.
A good harness can be adjusted in height, recline and chest width to fit your body. Check that it has a container for the reserve parachute and that the handle is easy to reach in flight.
