Paragliding in Merzouga: Flying Over the Sahara Dunes

Paragliding in Merzouga: Flying Over the Sahara Dunes

Merzouga, on the edge of Erg Chebbi, is one of the most photographed landscapes in Morocco. It also attracts paraglider pilots looking for a very different setting from the mountains or the coast: a sea of sand that changes shape with the wind.

One important point first: in the Merzouga dunes only experienced pilots with their own equipment fly. There are no tandem flights, so this is not a place to try paragliding for the first time.

What flying the dunes is like

A large dune behaves, in a way, like a small slope: when the wind blows against it, the air rises and lets the pilot stay aloft for a while. It is dynamic flying, very different from mountain thermal flights.

The dunes are also not fixed terrain. The wind reshapes them day by day, so the ridge you flew yesterday may look different today. That means studying the terrain every time and never relying on memory.

Who this flight is for

It is a destination for independent, experienced pilots: launches and landings in wind, wing control close to the ground and the judgement to decide when not to fly. You need your own complete equipment and suitable insurance.

If you are just starting out, the sensible route is to train first in a zone with a school and pilots who can guide you. The dunes are unforgiving of beginner mistakes because you fly close to the terrain and there is little margin to react.

Safety in a remote environment

The desert is far from everything. Medical and rescue services are not around the corner, so it is best to fly accompanied, tell someone where and when you will fly, and carry communication and enough water.

Sand, heat and direct sun also matter. Sand can damage equipment, heat reduces your margin and the middle of the day is not the best time. Look after your wing, helmet and harness as anywhere else, and check everything before each flight.

When to go and how to plan the trip

Merzouga is far from the big cities and getting there takes several hours by road. Plan the trip calmly and book accommodation in advance in busier seasons.

The in-between seasons are usually more comfortable than midsummer, when the heat is intense. Even so, conditions change: always check the wind forecast on the day and decide on the ground.

And if you want a tandem flight

If what you want is a first flight with a professional pilot, the desert is not the place. For tandem flights and courses, the sensible choice is one of the club flight zones, with prepared launches and pilots who know the terrain.

Equipment and specific preparation

Flying close to the ground, on soft terrain and in wind, demands well-maintained equipment and careful preparation. Check the wing, lines, harness and helmet before travelling and again on site. Fine sand gets everywhere: keep your gear well protected and avoid dragging the wing along the ground.

Bring clothing that protects you from sun and wind, glasses with protection and a way to communicate with your group. In a landscape with few reference points, it is easy to lose your sense of distance.

Respect for the environment and local people

The dunes are a fragile natural space and also the livelihood of many local families. Respect local guidance, leave no waste and ask before taking off or landing near camps or villages. A respectful approach opens many doors and makes the trip better for everyone.

Training for pilots

If you do not yet have the experience to fly demanding terrain like the dunes, start with a course with certified instructors and progress step by step.

Conclusion: Merzouga offers a unique flight, but only for prepared pilots and without tandem. If you meet the profile, plan carefully, fly accompanied and respect the terrain.
