Paragliding in the Atlas: Flying in the Mountains of Morocco

The Atlas is the great mountain range of Morocco and one of the most impressive landscapes in North Africa. Its valleys, adobe villages and peaks, including Toubkal, the highest mountain in the country at 4,167 metres, form a unique setting.

For paragliding, the mountains offer a very different kind of flight from the coast. In this article we explain what to expect and how to approach the Atlas safely.

A range of contrasts

The Atlas brings together high peaks that can hold snow for much of the year and green valleys dotted with Berber villages. Moving from one landscape to another in a few kilometres is part of its appeal.

Near Marrakech, the first foothills give access to flight zones with views towards the main range.

What mountain flying is like

In the mountains, the air behaves differently from the coast. Sun heating on the slopes creates rising currents and conditions change through the day, usually with more activity in the middle hours.

That same energy demands respect: turbulence and wind changes are more common, which is why local experience and the pilot's judgement are essential.

Where to fly in the Atlas area

The Aguergour zone, in the hills near Marrakech, is the club's reference for flying with views of the Atlas. It is a usual zone for tandem flights, with transport from the city.

If you are a pilot looking for other mountain terrain, check with the club: we can advise you on which zones make sense for your level.

Safety in mountain terrain

Before any flight you should check the equipment, the forecast and the landing plan. The mountains offer fewer emergency landing options than other terrain, so planning is more careful.

If it is your first flight, do it with a professional tandem pilot. If you already fly on your own, do not fly alone and respect your limits.

When to go

Spring and autumn are usually pleasant seasons to move around the mountains and fly in milder temperatures. In winter there can be snow and cold at altitude, and in summer the heat concentrates in the middle hours. Check with the club to adjust the date of your visit.

Excursions and culture in the mountains

Beyond flying, the Atlas offers hikes, Berber villages, waterfalls and valleys with traditional markets. A day excursion lets you see a very different Morocco from the big cities.

If you are short on time, combine a morning flight with lunch in a mountain village and a short walk in the afternoon.

What to bring to the mountains

At altitude the weather changes quickly: bring warm clothing even if it is hot below, comfortable footwear and sun protection. Bring water and light food, and do not forget a well-charged phone.

For flying, always follow the instructions of the pilot and the club on equipment, schedules and the day's conditions.
